Dagdusheth Ganpati |
Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated all over India in honor of the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati i.e. Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is known with many names like Vinayaka, Ganpati and Ganesh. He's considered to be the most popular God in India. He is also known as Vighnaharta (Remover of obstacles). The festival is majorly celebrated in Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It's often a saying that, first time this festival was celebrated in Pune during Shivaji's reign, since then the festival has taken place in every household of Maharashtra and other places of India. Its a massive festival in India, people install murtis(idols) of Lord Ganesha in public pandals(stalls) and at their homes and work places.Artisans who prepare these murtis(idols), take months to complete different types of clay models in huge numbers. Since Maharashtra is considered to be the origin of this festival, people come in great numbers from different corners of the country to witness the celebrations.
I've been living in Pune for 2 yrs now and have witnessed this festival in its traditional style for which its popular and is known around the globe. One can find Ganesha idols in every street, society and offices. When you are in Pune, the best thing you can do here is "Pandal hopping", to feel the authentic celebrations and liveliness across the streets. The dhol-tasha performances, evening arti, fair and small customized markets etc. are some of the things that cannot be defined in words. The atmosphere here is worth experiencing! So, buckle up and go and explore your cities to experience the joy of this festival.
Here I'm sharing some of the pictures from last year's Ganpati festival, Pune. Enjoy!

I was waiting for post on Ganesh Chaturthi and here I'm. So lovely. I'm more surprised at seeing Dagdusheth Ganpati pandal, it's no where less than any temple. I'm very much excited and interested to witness the celebrations in Mumbai. Let's see when Siddhivinayak listens to me and calls me for the party. Ganpati Bappa Morya, Mangal Murti Morya!! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Thank you so much for your kind words, Abhinav! And you're right that Dagdusheth pandal looks like a temple only. It's huge and people come in great numbers to witness this. Hope you too visit Pune some time. :)
DeleteAnd I am sure, Siddhivinayak Bappa will call you soon to visit him. :)
Simply super pics, Saumy! I am a big fan of Dagdusheth btw, so thank you for this!
ReplyDeleteI especially loved the flowers/gajra wala pic :)
Thank you so much for your kind words, Mayuri! Glad you liked the pictures :)
DeleteGanesh Chaturthi is here and not everyone is excited. Some revel in the festivities, the adorned Ganpati pandals, the hustle and bustle and the modaks! But others don't see the festive spirit and believe that even Ganesh would get frustrated in the traffic and chaos that the occasion brings. Some also worry about the environmental damage that visarjans cause every year. Pollution has always been a sensitive subject when it comes to Ganpati celebrations. Noise pollution and disruption of daily activities has been another issues, especially for the city folk.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and sharing your point of view too. :)

DeleteWe must also take this opportunity to pay our gratitude to Shri Bal Gangadhar Tilak who popularised this festival in Maharshatra. This united the whole of Maharashtra and Ganpati Baba waded off the obstacle of English in India. One major factor contributing to India's freedom.
